WELCOME   -   FAILTE   -   BIENVENUE

We have all just lost probably one of the most knowledgable and likeable of people in as far as our Jacobite History is concerned. Her name is Miss Christian Aikman. It was always a pleasure for me to bump into her during an event, have a guid gab and brush up my understanding of the Jacobite period in our Scottish History. Thankyou Christian Aikman, for everything you so gladly shared.

The Centenary commemorations of the Battle of la Somme - 1st of July - have come and gone. As with the Verdun Centenary, which was commemorated virtually two months in advance of the traditional date, due to Euro Football quarter finals (would you believe it...), the Somme commemorations were also subjected to a good deal of stress due to security arrangements. Our apologies go out to inhabitants and local residents in la Somme who were restricted in their movements.

Alliance France-Ecosse laid two wreaths, one at the main cairn and the second (in fact laid by Keith Brown, the Scottish Transport and Veterans Minister), in front of the French monument aux morts, as Contalmaison is the only 1st of July ceremony on the Somme that commemorates the fallen of both nations : Scotland and France.

However, we are still awaiting an answer, a reply to a quest that was launched by Alliance France-Ecosse some time ago - that is to honour Jack Alexander, the Edinburgh writer and leitmotive behind all that has happened at Contalmaison since the inauguration of McCrae's Battalion cairn back in 2004. Hopefully Scotland's decision makers can recognise, as his friends have done since the day they first met him, that Jack Alexander is probably our nation's leading brain on the subject of the First World War. If, God forbid, he had been born south of the border, then there is no doubt, he would already have been awarded at least an MBE/OBE for all that he has achieved. We might have no medals back home in Scotland, but hopefully we have the human decency to recognise a guid man when we see him...!

Alba Gù Brath and Jack Alexander Gù Brath.
